Treating Bunions in Bellevue

At the Foot & Ankle Center of Kirkland our doctors treat a wide range of foot and ankle maladies among the most common are bunions. A bunion is an enlargement of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint at the base of the big toe. This occurs when the bone or tissue at the base of the MTP moves out of place causing the toe to move towards the other toes forming a large bump on the foot. The MTP joint carries the body’s weight making the bunion painful and swollen while the MTP itself becomes stiff and sore. People suffering from bunions find it extremely difficult to wear shoes and walking is hard and painful. Symptoms of bunions include development of a firm bump on the outside edge of the foot near the base of the big toe, redness, swelling and pain near the MTP joint, corns or other irritation caused by the overlapping of the first and second toes as well as painful and restricted motion of the big toe necessitating a Bellevue bunion treatment.

There are several methods we can utilize as an effective Bellevue bunion treatment depending on the severity of the individual case. If the bunion is mild or still developing our doctor takes a conservative approach and focuses on relieving the symptoms of the bunion through the use of padding on the bunion or inside the shoe to cushion it and uses taping to keep the toes in as normal a position as possible. Our doctor can also prescribe medications such as anti-inflammatory medications or cortisone to relieve the pain. Sometimes physical therapy or ultrasound therapy is used to relieve the symptoms. Orthotics also help control foot function and position when walking. If the bunion gets more severe surgery is used to help patients. A bunionectomy is a procedure where the bony prominence is removed. In very severe cases a more involved procedure is used where our doctor will cut the bone and realign the joint.

If left untreated bunions can lead to other foot problems such as hammertoes as well as strains on the knees and back. If you are having foot trouble visit our office for an evaluation by our doctor and Bellevue bunion treatment.
